“Either You Are Hurt, or You Are Injured!”

I cannot stand people who are soft. They bother me. I will never force someone to do something they claim hurts, but my God, it seems as though these days a lot of people are critically injured only to make a miraculous recovery 48 hours later. Whether it’s “my shoulder” or my “hamstring” or what have you. Whatever happened to the good old days when the football coach would say “Son, either you are hurt, or you are injured.” The implication being, we all have to train through, and play through bumps, tweaks, and bruises, but should never put ourselves at risk to become seriously injured. I guess what I am saying is these days, it seems as though an alarming majority of people simply don’t know the difference between mild pain and serious injury, which goes along the fact that people of this generation are butter soft!

Am I saying to train through pain? ABSOLUTELY NOT. But people, there is a large difference between muscle tenderness and a torn hamstring.  If you are tender or sore from a workout, take care of yourself. Don’t go out drinking 3 times a week, drink no water during the day, and sleep for 5 hours a night, and then wonder why you can’t do Glute Ham Raises without cramping. Are you really that dumb? Rather, hydrate well, eat well, sleep well, stretch, foam roll, and repeat, and you will be amazed with how much better you feel.

Toughen up and take care of yourselves, and the gains WILL follow!

I agree, Ive been coaching high school football for two years now in New Hampshire and half these kids won’t practice if they get a bruise the day before. I have never seen anything like it we sometimes can’t practice because we have too many hurt kids. I have talked to the trainer and he has told me that these kids would be fine to practice if they really wanted to.I don’t know if they are scared or have it in their little heads that they are really hurt or if they are just tryin to miss practice.

John,

I feel like it is a sad state of things these days. Not all, but many young athletes are slick, soft, and know how to take advantage. That is why I love our gym, because we will beat that our of them, as you well know!

It is the difference between does it effect your game or not. If you can play up to the ability that you were playing at before the so-called “injury” then yes you can still play, practice, etc.  Maybe lay off of the heavy training where ever you have a deep bruise or soreness but still train hard.  If you are hurt to the point where you can’t function and play the way you did before you got hurt then no need to play; rehab it and get whatever you hurt healthy again.  There is also a line between going hard and going stupid.  If you know you are hurt and can’t perform to the best of your ability then there is no sense in pushing it and digging an even deeper hole than the one you are in.

Good blog matt, I agree that alot of high school athletes have a low tolerance for pain and sit out at the slightest discomfort they receive from training, practice, etc. Like Sawyer said though there is a definite difference between playing hurt and injured. If you are injured to the point where you can’t function properly then its pointless to put yourself in a bigger hole. However alot of people I have seen don’t want to practice or even play in a game just cause of there knee, shoulder, elbow, whatever being a little sore or in some pain. In an ideal world you wouldn’t get sore at all from training or practicing but this isn’t an ideal world. Especially in a contact sport like football or wrestling you’re going to get sore, its inevitable. In my experience with wrestling there wasn’t a single match I went into without being a little sore and in a pain on some part of my body(wrestling with bad cauliflower ear isn’t very pleasant. But I also experienced more serious injuries (breaking my hand) and didn’t try to wrestle through that because nothing good would’ve came from that. There’s a line between being tough and sucking up a little pain and discomfort and being a idiot and hurting yourself worse and any serious athlete knows this.

Mike & Chris,

You both great make points, and I guess that makes my point even stronger. You guys are two of the tougher guys in the gym so that goes without saying for you 2!

I disagree with most of the comments made on this blog.  Not a single one of you guys are thinking about the star on the team who goes so hard in his tuesday game that he is forced to take it easy in practice on wednesday so he can be 100% for his thursday game.  Don’t get me wrong if i had a game the next day i would definitely be ready to play and would play balls to the wall but there is no reason for me to push my self to the point where i could get hurt the day before a game.  Also at the higher levels , one practice is not going to make a difference it is more about mental preparation.  Im a very competitive person and in my 4 years of varsity lacrosse and one year of devision 1 lacrosse i have sat out all of 4 practices so you cant call me soft but I still feel that its the meathead attitude that gets kids hurt for no reason in practice.

I agree completely with sawyer, and even if you are a little banged up it doesn’t mean you have to sit out the exercise or replace it. I used to be in the gym last year and could have a problem with a hamstring, not claiming that it was torn or anything serious, but matt would just tell you to reduce the weight from 325 to 305 and ask how that feels.

Excellent read, I just passed this onto a colleague who was doing a little research on that. And he actually bought me lunch because I found it for him smile So let me rephrase that. I just wanted to throw you a big thanks - you cleared up some things for me!

Nonetheless, one of most important things is finding the right keywords for your site. They are not only the basis of a proper SEO campaign but also of the SEO design. Deciding upon the keywords that you are going to use can help you figure out what your competitors are. Making your site SEO friendly from the very beginning will be much better than making changes later on. website design toronto

I have found a lot of useful information from this platform. I must say that sharing your thoughts with one another is an easy way to relax yourself in the daily hectic routines. Each time a description of the change, there are always lots of talk about it anywhere. These are not exempt.  I mean one must be up to date with the day to day change in the environment and in the technology as well. In my personal opinion, the world is turning into a global village and now you can get a lot of required information by just a click while sitting where ever you are.
