LeBron…The Best NFL TE of All Time? You Decide.

I don’t know if he was reared on the sparkling shores of Krypton and transplanted to Akron, Ohio at age 13, but one thing is for sure; Lebron James is out of this world. Tune into Sports Center during the NBA’s regular season and chances are LBJ (by far his best moniker)’s exploits are splattered all over theTop 10 plays of the day. They usually include some sort of unholy display of sheer athleticism and head scratching power. Calling him versatile is like calling the Grand Canyon a ditch. He’s either dunking on a 7 foot European while receiving a foul that would be better placed in the UFC or blowing by men 8 inches and 80 pounds lighter with a Mazaratti’s burst. James' highlights are nothing short of breathtaking.

LBJ. Not of this world, and not hard to envision running a post pattern for the Browns, either!

Any sports fan worth their weight in Starting Lineup Figures knows that comparing athletes from different eras and different sports is usually an exercise in futility. Egos get bruised, friendships tested and no one can definitively answer if Babe Ruth in today’s game would a fat bum or the tremendous player everybody universally cherishes. But is sure is fun debating isn’t it? Barry Sanders with Emmit Smith's line. A healthy Ken Griffey Jr.  Len Bias playing on the Celtics of the mid 80’s. There are millions of examples, and chances are you may have discussed several with your buddies throughout the years. This brings me to today’s topic. Last year state farm ran an ad campaign where Lebron decided to forgo his NBA career and sign with the Cleveland browns. I had envisioned King James strapping up a helmet in the NFL before but the commercial made it a hot topic of discussion for many and thrust yours truly into a debate that remains as completely unresolved as it was last year. The question is “Would Lebron James be the best tight end the NFL has ever seen? ”
I’ve been charged with remaining objective in this post but chances are you know what side I’m leaning toward. (theres still time to sign, Buffalo!) Lets look at the measurables; according to STATS LLC the average tight end in 2009 checks in at 6’4” 255.4 pounds. On his NBA player page Lebron is listed at 6’8” 250 pounds but there have been claims that he weighs as much as 274 according to what source you read.
So, he’s definitely taller than the average bear and there’s a chance he’s bulkier too. Sadly, the only other piece of concrete physical evidence I have is in the vertical leap. The highest number at the NFL combine last year for a tight end was Jared Cooks 41,” at the NBA predraft combine years ago Lebron topped out at 44.”
Lebron was an All State Wide Receiver as a Sophomore in High School, but chose (what’s now looking as a wiser financial and health related decision) to stick with hoops. Virtually every major high profile college football coach made a half-hearted play at getting Lebron to suit up for a year and let’s face it, have a ton of fun. NBA riches proved to be too much, and for a man that eventually wants to be a billionaire his choice definitively made more sense.
Detractors in this argument say that those long limbs are a bull’s-eye for NFL defenders and his ACL’s would have to be made of titanium to hold up to the persistent knee hunting. Compound that with the complexity of NFL offenses and his high center of gravity in the run blocking game, it wouldn’t be long before he found himself either benched or seriously injured.
So there you go fellas, you have the frame and a little bit of athletic background regarding both. The rest is up to you. Is Lebron such a transcendent force he could take the NFL by storm and be as unstoppable as he is in the NBA? Or would the added height and time away from the game result into a mess of an experiment most likely ending in an injury? Remember there is no wrong answer, unless you disagree with me. Let the games begin.

I think LeBron would be for the reasons you mentioned.  It may take him a little while to get going, but when you look at the way basketball skills have translated to the TE position (Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates), combined with the raw athleticism (Vernon Davis like in that regard), I think he would quickly establish his dominance.

The blocking argument is silly to me.  How often are TE’s measured by there blocking today?  The game has changed so that TE’s are essentially WRs who can create scary matchups with their combination of athletic ability and size.

Either way, though it will probably never happen, it would be fun to see.

This argument started a year ago with myself, Jon, Brian, and our friend Joe Nelson, and I still feel the same way I did then. I do not think we see 6’8” tight ends for a reason, can you imagine one shot in the knee region from Troy Polamalu or Bob Sanders? That is a lot of knee to hit.

Blocking is still a PART of the game, just because some guys don’t do it well, doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be done or discredited. I have to think a myriad of NFL coaches would disagree with your stance on blocking for Tight Ends. In fact, while watching Hard Knocks this year, they get on the rookie, Chase Kaufman, for failing to block effectively.

Lebron is a freak, but not the best TE of All Time, I still think if he played for the Browns, he would actually be a WR.

Whose the one in law school? wink

 on  11/04  at  12:16 PM

I think to say the best TE of ALL TIME is hard to say..since we simply don’t know how he would play..Lebron has all the measurements to make a great and maybe best ever TE, but until he does..we can’t say hes better than the ones who have already proved it.  I am curious to what kind of speed Lebron has..because if he was fast fast i would simply put him @ WR to take out the blocking aspect..Either way, Its one of those cases that you can’t make some absurd judgment since it will never happen.  You also have to look at guys like Antonio Gates who played college bball then made the transfer to NFL. AG has been fairly successful making it to the All Pro Squad

Although he’s extremely athletic that doesn’t necessarily mean he would be a good football player. IF he played football all the way through high school and college then yeah he would probably be a good football player. I think actually if he played football he’d be a better DE then a WR or TE. With his long arms, strength and explosiveness he’d be a nasty pass rushing end.

 on  11/04  at  03:12 PM

No one will ever question his athleticism and I think you would be hard pressed to make an argument that his skills would NOT translate to the NFL...my issue, however, is with claiming that he would be the best to ever play the position (so I guess I am in agreement with Matt)

A couple quick points to consider…

-Would he be able to grasp the mental aspect of complex NFL offenses?  I think that’s an important point not to be overlooked - I don’t care how athletic someone is, if they don’t understand the Xs and Os they cannot be the best…

-Yes he’s strong, yes he’s fast, but what about the football skills themselves....Braylon Edwards, Ted Ginn, Roy Williams - Guys like that exhibit that superior athleticism, but for one reason or another (Catching ability, Ineffective route running), they are not the best…

But at the end of the day its impossible to say and it makes for a compelling argument...good post discussion Brian

Joe,

Both great points. Saying Lebron James would be the BEST is much different than saying he would be “good” or even “great”. We saw what happened when Michael Jordan, one of the best athletes of all time, tried to transcend sports. Sometimes is isn’t as easy as people may believe.

The same could be said for brock lesnar, that guy is scarily athletic and was cut from the Vikings. Although he had not played football sense high school, it goes to show you that extraordinary athleticism isn’t all that is required to play pro football

 on  11/04  at  10:26 PM

Yes, the difference is LeBron is 10X the athlete Brock is, and was a high school football STAR in a Top 5 football state. Nice example though.

 on  11/05  at  08:32 AM

I dont know about lebron being 10 times the athlete brock is, when he tried out for the NFL at the combine he ran a 4.7 40, 35 inch vertical, and a 10 foot broad jump i think and weighed 290, that insane.

 on  11/05  at  09:26 AM

I would have to disagree with the statements about lebron being to tall and his knees being a large target. There are many players in the NFL who are 6’5’’ or in that range, and they have not had knee injuries. Two off the top of my head are Ben Roethlisberger and Peyton Manning. Granted, Troy Polamalu is on the same team as Roethlisberger, I would like to know about a statistic that corresponds the height of nfl players with knee injuries.(If anyone can find that, please post it.) I’m sure the results would prove that King James would not be at a larger risk than other player. Lebron would be similar to Brandon Jacobs running at you. He is a little bit lighter, but runs a little bit faster, and many people have seen what happens when you try to go at Brandon Jacobs knees. Not much happens.  Last thing, we are not talking about a 6’8’’ athlete who moves as well as Yao Ming. We are talking about Lebron James, who played in the NBA with 25 year old men who were at their prime when he was only 18, and did amazing things. We are talking about a PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE who is 6’8’’, 250 pounds, has a 44’’ vertical leap, and runs a 4.5 40 yard dash at the least.

 on  11/06  at  12:13 AM

Blais,
I think the fact that you think height is a non-issue is comical. I am 6’5” and an Offensive Lineman at the Division 1 level. I am also good friends with our 6’8” Center for the Basketball team, and While 3 inches does not seem like a lot. it is. I understand that Lebron is a freak athlete. And maybe his height would not be the downfall to his career, but it could very easily be. and also to say he is faster than these TE’s. I just do not think it is true. I would like to know where you found that he runs a 4.5, because at an NFL combine 40’s are electronically done and come up slower than hand times. Also he is strong, but being the same weight and 4 or 5 inches taller than a good NFL TE means you are not Bulky enough. I’d say If he decided to play fball, than he’d need to get his forty down to a 4.4 and be a good possession wide receiver, not a TE. B/c as you said these are PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES who actually played Football through college. and proved they can take a sport which is so much more physically tough than basketball.

I love LeBron.

I think LeBron is a player to watch in basketball. But in NFL, no way. Its two different thing. You better bet instead to a sports online betting rather confusing yourself with what LeBron can do. hahaha

I agree 6foot 8 inches is not someone I would want to muck with even in a so called no contact sport.

Lebron is not nicknamed King James because he is second rate. He has James was nominated for three ESPYs and was a winner of the Best NBA Player of the year. I would say he is good, though Lebron says, according to reports, that Kobe Bryan is a far better player.
