Music : The Key to a Good Lift, or Pointless Background Noise?

For me I’ve often found that I didn’t really place too much merit in the theory that music can motivate herculean efforts in the gym.  Don’t get me wrong, I feel that music is a complete necessity.  Anyone who’s stepped into a facility resembling superman’s fortress of solitude will tell you a quiet gym is about as intense as a hello kitty backpack.  But that’s it, nothing more. My formula was: silence=excruciating misery, music=gotta be there, genre be damned.   As long as there was something distracting me from the various guttural moans and grunts I figured game on, Spice Girls away.

Is this what you like to listen to before a max effort deadlift?

Our clientele is diverse and the gym has had a wide variety of musical styling’s bumping through the walls.  Little Wayne’s profound lyricism, Lamb of Gods driving double bass and Kelly Clarkson’s sparking octave bending wail (thanks Kyle), we have pretty much heard it all.  But I have been looking around recently and noticing some people respond tremendously well to a certain track, hammering out weights they may or may not have other wise attained.  I myself reconnected with a tremendous “smash your head through a wall” album- Rage Against The Machine’s self titled album, and saw a bit of the mad dog come out in me.

So what is it? Hogwash? Valid? What say you iron heads, does music dictate how you are going to perform or will Air Supply’s greatest hits carry you though a max effort lower body day?  Let the debate “rage” away!

Well I personally like to workout to Metallica and Godsmack but can still do without. I don’t really need music and actually rarley bring it with me to the gym. I do feel that it helps more when working out by myself. It helps to take the place of another person that would help push the extra rep. Being a member at planet fittness where they play the worst music ever you learn to just ignore it. When you are in that workout zone I dont think it matters what you are listening to. Soooo I feel that music is not needed but does get you in that workout zone in a faster maner.

Good post and I agree I get a better lift with music there, I can even deal with Steves techno music, but I would appreciate it if Little Wayne was no longer mentioned in the blog.

I think the key is “environment.” If you create energy and a sick atmosphere, people will train hard and get great results. For me, music is not everything, but is a big part of that. Anything Disturbed gets me ready to go, today we all had a great workout rocking to All That Remains.

Ha..you know how i feel about that Coheed and Cambria CD!

While I feel that music is a good tool to up the intensity and get after it, it isn’t always needed before a big lift..a lot of lifters and athletes would benefit from just positive thoughts, positive imaging..etc in the gym, and even on the field.  Before plays thinking about how youre going to make that awesome block, make that amazing catch, or make that touchdown run..etc.  If you step up to line and think to yourself “oh man, im never going to make this block..i just dropped the football, im going to do it again”..most likely its going to happen.

In the gym I have a lot of phrases and thoughts that go through my head before a big lift, key phrases, etc that get me going..I think people need to tap into that more..the mind is a pretty powerful tool.  While you’re on that 5th rep of a 10 rep set of squats, prowlers, etc..don’t just think “man this sucks”...stay positive...one of the things that i tell myself over and over when i’m training is simply “next level”..that’s all the motivation i need.

Oh yeah, I do agree, nothing like a little Lamb of God blasting to get ya going!

While I can’t say that I’ve ever put up any significant weight, I do agree that good music certainly helps.  I have to work out at the Tulane gym, which is very nice, clean, place, lots of equipment, etc. but absolutely NO enviroment.  Typically they play easy listening music (think dentist’s office).

Needless to say I miss the gym!  Hope you all are well up there and keep getting after it!

Good music certaintly helps. Staying positive and saying things to yourself to motivate yourself definitely help, especially during hard conditioning sessions ie prowler mile, the hell that is new jersey, etc. Rock and metal are usually good and select rap songs, meaning no LIL WAYNE. Lil Wayne should be banned from any gym thats serious.

sticks, you know music is a big part. if you have music on, people are listening to it and reacting differently.

as a previous poster said, it’s a guarantee if you’re working out alone. plus there is such good working out music, it’s a truth.

i believe that certain music has the capability of changing the activity.

Whenever I go for a walk with my dog, a Jack russell cross, he tries to attack other dogs. I got him from a cats and dogs home a couple of months ago. I like to let him off for a run around because he has a lot of energy. Most of the time there’s another dog in the field and he runs off to it. He won’t come if I call him if there’s another dog and he tries to attack it.
